When Madeleine Willsher bought land in Zimbali Golf Estate in 2005, it was covered in silver oaks. They were captivated by its sensational position – a perfect, fan-shaped plot fronting the lake, with expansive ocean views.
A little piece of heaven.
Best-laid plans, of course, and once the site was cleared, another, more challenging, picture was painted. Madeleine laughs. ‘To say it was a difficult site for construction is the classic understatement. The land sloped right away, down to the lake. It required a true engineering feat, with 120 reinforced concrete piles sunk into the ground, and we weren’t permitted to lay a brick for an entire year.’ |
