Stellenbosch is a charming little town situated in the Western Cape. Founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel it is the second oldest European settlement in the province, after Cape Town. About 50 kilometers east of Cape Town it lies along the First River banks, better known as the “Eerste Rivier”. The town became known as the City of Oaks, or Eikestad in Afrikaans, due to the large number of oak trees planted by its founder. Stellenbosch has its own municipality incorporating the neighbouring towns of Pniel and Franschhoek.
